Why skate at all?? 17 million Americans skate each year and there must be a good reason why. There are several:

• Skating burns calories. A 160-pound adult skating a marathon in two hours expends 1,668 calories, according to a study by the University of Massachusetts.
• Inline skating is a great cardio workout.

• Inline skating works major muscle groups such as the calves, thighs, and buttocks.
Inline skating is low-impact, with about half the impact as running.

Most importantly, inline skating is fun. Have you ever gone running just for the workout, dreading that first step out the door? Skaters don’t have to jump over that hurdle. Something about the rhythmic, smooth nature of skating helps turn the sport from a workout into a lifetime activity for many participants.

So, now that we have you hooked, why skate a marathon?

• Enrolling in a skating marathon provides motivation for your training.
• Skating a marathon is much easier than running one! The world skating marathon record is less than half the time of the world running marathon record.
• Skate marathons are a fun group experience. Many marathons now offer a whole weekend of events.
• Skate marathons are a great excuse to travel to fun parts of the country or the world.

Don’t put it off! There are skating marathons throughout the world and at all times of the year!
